I'm thrilled to share my passion for home decor, family traditions, and the beauty of cherished heirlooms with you. Growing up surrounded by the breathtaking mountains of southwest Virginia, I learned to appreciate the warmth and history that infuse every corner of a home. My journey was shaped by my artist grandmother, who taught me to see beauty in everything, from an oversized ball of twine to a rusty old horseshoe. Her influence ignited a spark within me to create a home that tells a story.
For me, home decor is not just about aesthetics; it's about capturing the essence of who we are and where we come from. In my own home, 75% of the items are family heirlooms that hold priceless sentimental value. They are not just pricey antiques, but rather objects that belonged to my grandparents or things my children have made. I firmly believe that decorating rules are meant to be broken. Instead, I encourage you to fill your space with the things you love, the pieces that carry memories, and the treasures that make your heart sing. Let's create a home that reflects your unique journey and celebrates the joy of living.
As fate would have it, my family's story intertwines with the histories of Sullins College and Camp Sequoya. Back in 1976, my father's business, United Coal Company, acquired the struggling all-girls college in Bristol, Virginia. The college's campus became the company's headquarters, a thriving hub where business endeavors were merged with the echoes of education. Through the years, I have witnessed the transformation and the resilience of the Sullins College campus. It now stands as a testament to adaptability and the enduring power of history. Alongside the College, Camp Sequoya also became a cherished part of our family's narrative. Once a vibrant all-girls camp, it now rests silently, waiting to share its tales of youthful energy and outdoor adventures.
My desire to inspire others led me to create Life on Virginia, where I share ideas and tips for infusing your home with heart and personal history. Whether it's repurposing vintage treasures, incorporating family heirlooms into your decor, or curating memorable entertaining experiences, I want to help you create a space that is authentically yours. I believe that imperfections are what make a house a home, and I'm here to guide you in celebrating the beauty of those imperfections.
I love curating unforgettable experiences through personalized details, using my Granny's place settings and adding touches of nostalgia to create memorable gatherings.
I'm a mild hoarder when it comes to sentimental items, holding onto family heirlooms and keepsakes that evoke cherished memories.
I have a knack for finding hidden gems at flea markets and yard sales, transforming forgotten pieces into cherished treasures.
